I'm sure later replacements and production were steel or stainless steel.
But as of July 1943 it was paper. The Description was
WASHER: Paper: Several
The revision of 18 December 1943 removed a lot of mostly mechanical
hardware type parts from the parts list, which shrank by about one half.
The really wierd thing about the JNQ manual series is that although it had
been listed in the title as early as 25 February 1942, a schematic, wiring
diagram and photographs of the BC-348-Q didn't appear in the manual until the
revision of 30 July 1945
By the way, it just occurred to me to ask what happened to the original
shim? If it got lost of damaged, OK. But if there wasn't one under the
bearing retaining plate when you removed the plate, check the armature end float
before you assume someone else left it out.
