Quoting from a note from a friend:

"Roger on the improved version of the 81 set. I'd be happy with this one if
I could replace the bad Nicads, or what ever they are.
.....RX is not that hot, but I could swap it out with the standalone
version that I have. It's physically the same, but a little higher band
range.
I had two of the RX's, but upon opening the last one, discovered that the
vernier dial gears are brass dust now, and the band switch is
messed up. Mind you this was NOS out of the box. [Name] got one in the
same condition. Really bad QC or sabotage."

China has done an amazing job ramping up from the Great Leap Backwards under
the Mao Religion but there have been
problems along the way...and still are. I sometimes wonder how well their
war machine, their fighter aircraft and warships would
work in a real stress test. -Hue Miller
