I guess C rations are milsurplus of a different sort.

My C Rations story.

In 59-60 my Dad was stationed at Ladd AFB, Fairbanks, Alaska.

Each family was issued a case of C rations(one case for each 4 people
IIRC). To be used in case of emergencies only, and to be returned if
unused.

When we left in 60, the Air Force said the C rations were so close
to outdated to just keep them. We had to drive from Ladd down to
Elmendorf (Anchorage) so we wound up snacking on C Rations on the
trip down.

My brother came down with a bad case of what we think was food
poisoning. The rest of us were fine. I found I liked the white bread,
the bread about the size of a biscuit in a can.

Fast forward now to 1966 or so.

Dad was stationed at a Navy base in the Nevada desert. The Marines used
the mountains in the summer for manuevers, and I wound up working at the
base after high school. One of the jobs was on a survey crew, in those
same mountains. Apparently the Marines did not share my taste for C
Rations white bread, found quite a number of unopened cans tossed
around up there. I snacked on white bread for a couple weeks.

Also found a couple hundred feet of number 12 copperweld, but
that's another story.
