Not sure if I'm reading your question right Dave, but my understanding
is the white/gray paint was used for covering or cocooning aircraft
for its reflective abilities, helping to keep the aircraft cool
(relatively-speaking) in the desert sun compared to a dark cockpit,
for example. While the bare aluminum exterior is reflective, it's also
exposed to the elements. If you're going to wrap it up or paint it,
use something light that reflects or, at least, doesn't absorb a lot
of radiant rays. UV breakdown would be a consideration, too.
