[Milsurplus] Does anybody remember a torque amplifier?

An Amplidyne is a motor driven DC generator. The generator field is
controlled by relatively low power and the output at the brushes has
considerable power gain from the DC field. All the outpower power comes
into the system from the drive motor, which can be AC or DC.

In effect, an amplidyne is a modulator.

Many real Amplidynes are two-stage machines hooked in series. The overall
power gain is the product of the two stage gains. Cleverly, the stages are
oriented at about 90 degrees of rotation, so are decoupled electrically
while sharing the same mechanical structure.
