[Milsurplus] Does anybody remember a torque amplifier?

What you may be remembering is a form of amplidyne. They were used in lots of things but most notably on gun turrets. A control stick provided the signal to control a much larger high torque motor. Search 'amplidyne' and I think you'll find a lot more information than just tractors.
