Just a cautionary note that the acid in that wheel cleaner may be
hydrofluoric acid, which has some especially nasty medical effects above and
beyond the usual dangers of any strong acid.

It's one of those...'why didn't I think of that'.... sort of ideas.

And as long as we're giving credit where it's due, I'll add that most of
what I know about wrinkle paint and aluminum prep has came from Mike Hanz
over the last 10 years or so.
I think I can take credit for the Duagloss 851 as a good etching cleaner
though. And that brings me to two points I should have made about it before
in that not just any aluminum wheel cleaner will do. Some are nothing more
than heavy detergents. The only real clue on the Duragloss bottle is a
warning label that says; Caution: Contains acid-Avoid contact with skin and
eyes......
A cleaner with that kind of language should be an indication that it's the
good stuff.
Of course you should always try it on a scrap piece before you use it on
your prized possessions.
I also didn't mention that it's a good cleaner for aluminum that's to be
left bare, as in 274N stuff. It gives the aluminum a surface finish very
similar to some of the NIB original stuff that I have seen.
Later,
Steve
