The large can on the right resembles the power pack used on many 6VDC (or 
6VDC & 110VAC) powered radios of that era.  I think the circular thing on 
the left is the pulley for the tuning assembly.

FWIW, the rifle propped up next to the radio appears to be a British No. 1 
Mk III Lee Enfield.  Perhaps the radio is not of U.S. origin?
