[Milsurplus] OT: TA-312 phone

Hi all,  picked up a nice pair of TA-312 phones with the canvas pouches.
Wired em up and put in 4 new D batteries.  One seems to have strong side
tone as well as strong transmission into the other receiver. The second
phone has weaker side tone and weaker transmission into the first phone.

 

Can anyone point me to an adjustment to balance them out?

 

Also, when I hang up the handset, does the mouthpiece or earpiece go into
the side with the "hook"?
