[Milsurplus] WTB: ARC-3

On looking for AN/ARC-3 components, its always worth giving
Fair Radio an email. I was looking for the C-197/ARC-3 volume
control for my set, and on a hunch tried them, and they had some.

On the crystals, some things to bear in mind.

1. The AN/ARC-3 and the SCR-522 used the same frequency multiplication
scheme, and the ARC-3 will take the DC-11 holders the SCR-522 used. The
ARC-3 mainly used the CR-1/AR or /BR crystal unit, and they seem to
pretty plentiful at swaps and on eBay. Of course finding one on the
frequency of interest is the challenge.

2. FT-243s will work, with an adapter. I managed to find some adapters
somewhere, whether they were specifically designed for the ARC-3 or not,
I don't know. I had some FT-243s on 8275(I think for the BC-1335), which
put the receiver on 144.4. My target frequency was 144.36 and it worked
OK.

2B. I did some disassembly of CR-1 and FT-243 crystal units, and found
that *some* CR-1s and *some* FT-243s could swap the crystal itself, but
there were many different styles of construction, and sizes of crystal
blanks of both units.

3. The receiver is pretty broad, so you can be 2 or 3 kc off on the
crystal frequency, and still receive the channel of interest.

I think the hardest thing to find will be the mounts, although I did
see one on eBay a week or so ago.

Keep an eye out for an AN/ARM-3 (I think that is the number, my
collection is in storage at present). This is
the test set for the AN/ARC-3, and if complete will have the dynamotor
unit, control box and cable set(plus other goodies).

Hope this helps.
