I had a blast with mine awhile back as well,
even making several contacts on AM.
Did you disconnect that B+ filter electrolytic
that is before the TR switch contact, C-13? Before I found that,
the discharge arc as I switched to TX was eating-up
the switch contact. It is an obvious design flaw,
and I can't understand how the rig could have functioned
for very long without destroying the switch contact.
I just disconnected the cap and no more problem.

I have an original TBY (no number) I powered-up
a few years back and actually (yes; I confess)
got someone to talk to me on Chicken Band for a minute.
That was cool.
You can see the later-war shortage of strategic metals
in the TBY series. Put a soldering iron to a connection
in a TBY-1 or -2 and the solder melts quickly and flows
smoothly. Try it with a TBY-8, and you'll think you're
going to need a blow-torch. They cut way back on the lead.
