John,
I've never seen an 838. But looking at its specs in an early RCA Air
Cooled Transmitting Tube manual, it's no pantywaist. 1250 volts on the plate,
100 watts dissipation. Power gain of about 35 in push-pull zero-bias Class B
operation. There aren't many substitutes in that class.
