In 1980, the new York State tax collectors SERIOUSLY EXCEEDED their
authority and destroyed the Rochester hamfest, barely escaping without
serious injury. That was on Saturday. On Monday morning, almost 20
extremely angry people, many of them attorneys, waited on the steps of
the tax department offices in Albany. They were out for blood, and
thankfully, got it. Several officials and employees were fired within a
few hours, others retired at lightning speed. This is a part of
regional lore, it will never be forgotten or forgiven.
