Many years ago in the AM days, there were advertisements for
a "Static Eliminator".   Pictured was a coil wound on a toilet paper
spool, and had a sliding contact  for tuning.  It was placed in the
radio's antenna wire.   Technically it was a simple antenna tuner,
but any signal increase to the radio station was equaled by the
increase in the QRN noise.   As a kid in the 30's we had battery
radios with a outside wire antenna, but never once did we see
any helpfull instructions on how to make a good  broadcast
band antenna.
