The CPI is a fiction. It is NOT a true representation of real world
inflation. It's a government scam, IMO.
The rule of thumb I use is about 10x in the 40 years between 1965 and
2005. In '65 you could buy a basic car for $1000-$1200; now it's $10,000
-$12,000. A house that cost about $60,000 in 1975 is now selling in the
mid $600Ks.
