Since the RU receiver CWO operates at 1/2 the signal frequency, it occurred
to me
that a drop-in 2-diode Polyakov D-C detector might be an interesting
addition, if
one only wanted CW/SSB reception. Actually without regeneration the receiver
is
useless for AM, so a simple mod would be to rebias the detector less near
cutoff
so it worked as a product detector and not a power (AM) detector.
A fellow on another group mentioned he knew someone who had used the RU
as a novice ham receiver. He had started with something like a bottom-rung
S-38 and considered the RU an upgrade. I was intensely interested to get the
fellow's impression and experiences using the RU but was never able to
follow up.

In the PBYs with the RU-GO and ARB-ATB radios, where both the ARB and RU
receivers, with local controls, were on the radio op desk, I wonder if the
ARB
was switchable apart from the ATB. In other words, could the radio op use
the ARB with the GO? I suppose not, since that would require tuning the ARB
off the voice frequency, and the RU did a good enuff job on CW, the GO's
only operating mode. -Hue Miller
