I bought everything I needed for an AN/GRC-109 (except the R-1004
receiver) when Fair Radio was still selling available components
cheap. I think the transmitter was only about $30, but the R-1004
was no longer available.
At Dayton in 2001, I lucked out and found a complete AN/GRC-109A
(receiver, transmitter, small power supply) for $150. Even then,
that was a pretty decent price for a complete set, even if the "A"
model isn't quite as cute as the earlier version.
The AN/GRC-109A was manufactured on a 1969 contract.
I actually prefer the AN/GRC-9 over the AN/GRC-109(*). But I would
have thought that for actual military use, the AN/TRC-77 would have
been the best of the three.
