In Quebec we had a big problems with long power 735KV lines.
Their lenght gave them antenna caracteristics to sun bursts with induced
surges that tripped the protection systems
with resulting black outs.
Close watch on the sun bursts and reduced line loadings solved that problem.
The other solution was to use AC input, DC output power stations, DC
transmission power lines, DC to AC power stations down South
with the bonus of having instaneous synchronism with the end grids.
Our company had built marine switchboards for Light Ships, had complaints
mainly on broken couplings
when they tried paralleling.
Sent a tec. aboard and he watched the duty electrician keeping a look at the
main bus and stanby generator voltages only
He was used to the 220V DC system.
