Speaking of phase changes, I worked as a summer student in a power 
generating station in Northern Ontario around 1955. The station was 
quite isolated in the bush and a young operator in  training attempted 
to visually phase lock a generator to the local grid but hit the switch 
180 deg out of phase.

The result was the four inch bolts securing the generator to the bldg 
floor were ripped right out and the generator took out the adjacent wall 
and went for 600 feet into the bush. I got there after it happened and 
it showed the power of power.
