Some interesting observations in the previous posts.

Wasn't there also an underground antenna system that ran for about 150 
miles in northern Wisconsin? That could reach worldwide to submerged 
subs. I think it has now been taken out of service.

I used to install pocket pagers back in 1963. The tank circuit was a 
resonant reed relay and I could regularly copy NSS in Jim Creek Co. in 
downtown Toronto in the daytime.This was between 16K- 22Khz.   I guess 
today they'd say, "LF is cool man ".
