Ray & the gang -

Not all TBYs have radium paint -  some have lettering & legends done as 
bare aluminum.

I think that, when an Ra226 atom emits an alpha particle, the atom also 
emits other items which are also detectable.  Maybe electrons, maybe 
high-energy photons (gamma rays).
