When I was involved in measuring 25.8 KHz radioteletype
signals which were broadcast from Maine, USA, we used
a one-meter square shielded loop which was about 3 inches
by 1 inch, and had a few turns of spaced wire inside. There
was a two-stage tuned RF amplifier in the loop assembly.
Stoddard Aircraft receiver. Transmitter was the Alexanderson
Alternator. We measured first near Wash, DC, then at selected
inhabited sites in Alaska. Time: 1956. It may not have have
been the most efficient LF antenna in the world, but it was
transportable, and wasn't a Long Island Fishbone. As you all
know, the RBA was a bit heavy for our needs, although the
RBA was what we used at the fixed locations where the weather
was later copied.
73 to all, and a Happy 2011 which is upcomming.
