[Milsurplus] A question of Value

The answer to question 1 is very dependent on whether the person is a
collector or user. If you're looking for a virgin shelf queen then the
unmodified radio would be the best choice. It will sit on the shelf like
a fine bottle of wine and appreciate in value. If you want to use a bit
of history on the air then some repairs might be necessary. I guess it's
like going to a museum and looking at something on the shelf behind
glass and learning it's history compared to, say a historical military
radio event where you can touch and listen to an item that was involved
in history.
There are two sides to this coin, both are correct. There is a limited
supply of unmodified equipment and what's left should be preserved.
There are lots of "ham modified" radios that can be made presentable for
on air use.
The other question is how to classify official mods. Many BC348s, ARC5s
& others where serviced/modded by official avionic outfits.
Question 2 .... I prefer to use the rigs although I have a mint BC348
with mount that is a shelf queen as well as a US Navy RAB that is a 73
year old virgin. :-)
