My father was in the Army when Uncle Sam still thought
the Aleutians invasion was an emergency.
They packed his unit (likely intended as replacements
or part of a follow-up wave, since the U.S. units were
already in the Aleutians) in a train in Arizona
and headed for Seattle, where troop ships awaited.
He said the train was going so fast, he and his friends
thought they were going to leave the track and smash
on every curve. The conductor was walking up and down
the aisles shaking and muttering:
"the son-of-a-***** is gonna kill us.." over and over.
Sometime during a stop in northern California,
someone must have gotten a word because the train
slowed down to something like "normal" for the rest
of the long trip. Daddy got assigned as an MP to
guard the docks they were no longer going to use.
He soon got tired of that and asked for other
duty, which resulted in three campaigns in Europe.
