Subject: Restoration Project at the National Electronics Museum
This is my first post so please excuse any protocol errors. We
currently are restoring the XAF radar antenna. The XAF was the first
radar deployed on a USN ship. It was designed by the RCA and NRL, the
antenna was built by Brewster. The radar was mounted on the USS New
York for testing at the USN range at Vieques PR. After the war the
antenna became a gate guard the Navy Yard in DC. Sometime in the late
1990's it was cut into four pieces and thrown into a storage lot at
Cheatham Annex VA. NEM recovered it in 2008. To date the mount has
been repaired and painted. The antenna is undergoing restoration. He
is where we need help. The XAF looks like a bed spring (antenna
elements) suspended between a football goal post (mount). The mount
while restored cannot support the weight of the antenna . We need to
fabricate a support structure that is strong but unobtrusive - probably
external aluminum I-beams with internal aluminum bracing.
The museum looking for help designing the support and in fabrication.
If anyone is interested in more details please feel free to give me a
call.
