[Milsurplus] More thoughts on using LS-454 speakers with manpacks

Many manpacks (like the PRC-1099) have audio outputs specified as 600-ohm, but actually use devices like LM386s in the audio which operate over a wide range of impedances but work best at lower impedances (4 - 8 ohms).

I keep two LS-454s handy. One has just the connector pin rewired to allow use with packsets and other radios that really have 600-ohm outputs. The second one has the connector mod AND the internal transformer jumped out so the cable goes straight through to the 8-ohm speaker.

The PRC-74 will produce quite a bit more audio with the 8-ohm LS-454. In fact on some radios you'll get enough audio to produce feedback on transmit if you have your volume set too high.
