when I was a kid growing up in suburban NJ in the '50's and '60's ,the
big networks played war movies on Sunday afternoons.I must have seen
them all a hundred times. My favorites are "Wing and a Prayer" (brief
microsecond shot of the radios in a TBM) and "Dam Busters". Must have
watched Dam Busters for at least 8 hrs continuos on Million Dollar
Movie one day.....miss-spent youth! But i built the Revell model of the
modified Lancaster. To me British bombers were both ugly and beautiful
at the same time.Of coarse of all British aircraft the Spitfire was
truly a work of not only advanced technology built on a shoestring but
a work of Art as well. The only US aircraft that I find ugly and
beautiful at the same time is the PBY Catalina.

PS

There is a great documentary called "The Flying Boats".Even has footage
of the last two Martin "MARS".I wonder what their radio compartment had
installed to play with. Not shown in the film. They are converted for
fire bombing and may possibly be retired by now.

For some good P-47 footage, see the movie "Fighter Squadron" staring
Edmond O'Brien. There are some significant errors like P-51's playing as
ME 109's but still has lots of gun camera foota
ge.

That one will drive purists crazy tho.

The "Messerschmidts"  were P-15Ds, painted black and with swastikas
added. They were
played by an Air National Guard squadron near Hollywood.

BTW... "Fighter Squadron" was mainly shot in this part of the country,
at the old AAF field
in Marquette, Michigan.
