It would be interesting to compare the innards of these radios. The SPF
was a 5 tube superhet. I wonder if Marconi built under license or
developed their own look-a-like?
There is a very good document on the development of the US Forest
Service radio system here:

The author states that forest service radio started earlier in Canada
(pre 1927) than the US including the use of wireless in spotter aircraft.
When I worked for the BC Forest Service we had a mixed bag of radios,
Motorola bricks for VHF and old Spilsburys for HF.
