Ray,

The 51J-4 has mechanical filters.  The R-388 and 51J-3 are essentially the 
same.  Although I don't know whether changes made to the R-388 like 
replacing the second phone jack with a switch were or were not made to the civilian 
model.  There have been rumours for years that there was an R-388A that was 
the same or mostly the same or other weasel words as the 51J-4.  Seems that 
I recall someone reporting finding some paper on it but I can't recall the 
details.  I don't recall anyone ever saying that they had one but seems I 
also recall that someone said they had seen or had a modification kit.
