It may have been a USAF 618S-1/MC, which apparently RCA made from
older Collins 618S-1 units. It was USB-capable and *and* utilized
direct frequency input VFO tuning.

You can pull off the label, but that won't turn it back into the
C-1398/ARC-38 original. There were some electrical modifications
made to the unit, including mode switch wafer contact arrangement
modifications.
The AN/ARC-38A does not give a schematic of the AN/ARC-38A control box,
only a schematic of the original C-1398 box and a description of the
electrical and mechanical mods that are needed to adapt it to the RT-594.
Jack has reported in the recent past on the quirks of using the ARC-38A
box in place of the proper ARC-38 box for controlling the original
RT-311/ARC-38.
