The 618S1 was a crystal only radio, or at least that's all I know. the ARC-38 replaced the 618S and used the stablelised master oscillator deck along with a spectrum generator and one other different module and I think all ARC-38 were converted to ARC-38A SSB sets with different IF, SMO and other mods. everyone will disagree with me in that all the ARC-38 modules were stamped with modified for SSB but the audio, PA deck, variable IF/driver deck are all the same for the 618S, ARC-38 and ARC-38A. oddly the 618S cassie is way different underneath then the ARC-38A, I have not seen or know of a straight ARC-38 and would wonder what the wiring was for the non A version. I have a 618S1/4 that's been on the air for a couple years now and use it on 3.885, 7.290 and 14.236 with no issues but did spend a year getting the servo systems to work properly. they were used on USAF cargo, transport and some navy aircraft. not a popular radio but it was the first fully automatic, real autotune radio placed in service and has real plate modulated AM not like that wimpy AME stuff everything afterward used. you can see my 618S1/4 on my web page at www.ka3ekh.net
