To be more precise, it is an R-274D/FRR. The SX-73 variants of the R-274
are R-274/FRR and R-274D/FRR. The SP-600-JX variants are R-274A, R-274B and
R-274C/FRR.
The "second source" contracts were for the SP-600's. The original order
was for the SX-73 variant.
I recall a knock-down drag-out flame war on one of the lists a few years
ago over this exact subject. Two hams each had some variant of the R-274(*).
But one was Hallicrafters and one Hammarlund. It was a dead ringer for the
story of the elephant and the three blind men. Fortunately, this is a
scenario that only occurred a handful of times over the half century that the
Signal Corps and US companies built radio equipment for the US military.
Mostly, subsequent models of a set look pretty much like the base set.
The SP-600 had several other nomenclatures, at least one of which
(R-320A/FRR) was also shared with a different receiver.
