In the Squadron- Signals publication on the P-36 "Peashooter" Army Air
Corps Pursuit aircraft there is a picture that shows a T-17 microphone
bungee corded across the front of the cocpit.I guess easy to get to
that way.Pilot would probably have to shout into it as the wind, prop
blast and engine noise must have been pretty loud.So when did the P-36
get radios?
I flew in a WACO biplane, similar to the Stearman PT-17, with a girl
friend a long time ago for a sunset flight around Martha's Vineyard.I
tried to communicate by voice directly into her ear various sights and
she couldn't hear a word I said.We were both strapped into the forward
cockpit with snoopy helmets on.But you could hear the singing in the
wires and the drum of the fabric.
BTW this flight is still available to those visiting Martha's
Vineyard. A friend of my late step father named it "The Two-Wing-ed
Bi-Plane".
