[Milsurplus] GRC-9 Modification ?

As a thought experiment, what about this to 
improve the hamband tuning rate of the GRC-9
receiver:
You put capacitors in series with the gangs of
the tuning capacitor. This would seem pretty
basic because all 3 sections have same 
capacitance. This limits the tuning range.
Then you put caps across each band coil
to set where it tunes. The 2-3.5 band would
require some coil turns removal also.
The dial, if left as is, would not display the
actual frequency, but the goal would be
to get approx. these bands:
3.5 - 4
7 - 8 
9 - 10.5 MHz
So, what think?
Not basically my original idea: I have seen old
conversion articles, one on making your own 
HRO bandspread coils, or bandspreading the
RAO type receivers; also there is one BC-348
article that talks about bandspreading also.
