[Milsurplus] Mystery Instrument found in Navy Observation Dome in WA State

If I had a better idea of the location and view and could compare it with
the testing grounds, this would be my first limited education guess as well.

The condition of the dome and equipment seem to indicate a later rather than
earlier installation.

If they'd published the balance of the photos, with the range of experience
of the military and defense folks we have on the list we probably would have
had a good shot at figuring it out.

I'm surprised it didn't have one or more nomenclature plates on it. It's
possible they missed it/them.

>From the little I can see and the description of it appearing to be optical
in nature, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a specialized theodolite used
for tracking speed, distance and/or and direction of torpedoes fired on one
of the Navy torpedo test ranges.

For those who may not know, the Navy has had a torpedo development, test,
maintenance and repair facility here since 1914 (NUWC [Naval Undersea
Warfare Center] formerly know as NUWES [Naval Undersea Weapons Engineering
Station])

Just a guess, the Navy uses Dabob bay (or did) for submerged and surface
torpedo firing and testing, at least they did when I was recovering the ones
that sank. There were tracking stations hidden all around the area before
they computerized most of it. That was probably the base for an optical
tracking unit of some typ.

As I say,,,just an educated guess. Hard to tell without more pictures.

Thanks,
Perry

Anyone recognize the instrument shown in the article below? (Very limited
photo and they haven't yet published others.)
