There was a lot of South Atlantic activity.
The Graf Spey hung out down there. 
Natal was also a major relay point for Army
Air Forces CW traffic.  Florida to Natal, then
across to Port Laute(?), then up to Europe.
Propagation via the "Southern Route". 
HF DF in those days was very manual, some
times with the operator sitting up in a little
hut on the crossarm between the two vertical
Adcocks.
