Yes, definitely a lot of strategic shipping out of brazil.  The majority of
the high quality natural quartz for radio crystals came out of Brazil.  One
day a U-boat sank a large and especially critical shipment to the states.
>From that point onward all Brazilian raw quartz was shipped at great expense
via air.  This is well chronicled in the book "Crystal Clear" by Thompson.
