[Milsurplus] HFDFing U Boats

My ex's father commanded a US Navy HFDF station in Natal Brazil during WW 2. He?said they had good success in taking bearings on U Boats that would surface to communicate. The bearings were approximate but gave enough info for aircraft and surface craft to search for and sometimes find and sink U Boats in the area. I had no idea that there was sea combat around Brazil in WW 2 but I read up on it and there was due to the large amounts of strategic raw materials shipped out from there.
