Just a SWAG since at that time I was NYB (Not Yet Built) is that, as
Marty or someone indicated, these units were a stop-gap measure until
the URC-32 (KWT-6) and related gear came on line. Some of the first
synthesized rigs(maybe *the* first?), they were in development for a
while as SSB became the rage for comms work. I think SAC ended up with
the first ones, but anyone who did Navy comms time then knows they
used a bunch as well.
Not well known, earlier A-Line gear was also used by the military.
Somewhere I have a shot of a rack of 75A-2s in military use. There are
also several references online of bases/outposts that used the KW-1
transmitter.
Collins made some of the best communications-grade HF gear. The fact
that it worked well for amateur or aviation work was just that much
better.
