Usually those PPI radars which were used for air traffic
control had a "Map Generator" which used a film negative
and a photomultiplier tube.   I know the CPS-5, CPN-18
and FPN-47 did way back then.  Keep it simple.  These
negatives weren't all that large, and easy to change.   If you
use a spare PPI display with no video feed, but with the
brightness turned up, you can generate a video pulse where
ever and when ever you want by placing a light detector
on the display.  The light detectors were once carried by
Radio Shack, and looked like a small transistor with a
very small lenses in one end.  Good Luck.
