Herman -

Get a good book; Patience Patience Patience is the key.
Obtain a eye dropper just keep applying thinner/remover to the devices
it will soften up.

There is a furniture varnish stripper BIX that can break up varnish.
Tape off areas that you do not want stripped.

BIX stripper will eat the varnish off enameled wires; be careful. Use a
whetted cloth with distilled water dabbing off the gunk. You may thin
BIX with acetone. Once the Varnish softens up mineral spirits or lock
tight remover can then be used to get into the threads to help loosen
them. Patience Patience Patience is the key.

My 2 cents -
Hutch
