You are thinking about the Ten-Tec RX-325/SP-325 receiver.

"The SP-325 was produced US Navy under two contracts.  It was
designed as a training receiver for radio operators."

"The RX-325 was not a popular receiver because of its non-ergonomic design,
marginal audio, RF-section problems, and poor marketing." Shortwave
Receivers Past and Present - 3rd Edition.

A while back at Dayton, I saw a guy with a large number of SP-325's in
"untested" condition for $100 each.
