That's a good point about the mechanical fit problem.  Some of those bullet
packages featured a screw in the bottom to set the tension of the point
contact hair spring.  Since an HP Shottkey glass diode is approximately the
size of an 1/8 watt resistor (i.e. very small), I wonder if it could be
stuffed into the original case?  But as long as these NOS surplus diodes are
still kicking around and provided their point contacts haven't been
compromised, it seems that rarely would someone have to do a retrofit.  I
imagine that most of the current uses for these diodes would be as detectors
in old power meters.
