[Milsurplus] Sorta off topic question

On that auction place, there is a BC-348 listed that has
an aircraft number N 7286 marked on the front panel.

Looking at the FAA records, the current aircraft with that
number is a 1941 open cockpit bi-plane (White D-25A).  I sort
of doubt that it would have been equipped with a BC-348.

The question is:

Is there an record of historical N numbers? A quick google search
didn't turn one up, just current records.

Might be interesting to know what aircraft this particular radio came 
out of.
