Radiation? Maybe, but not the Alpha, Beta, Gamma kind. High RF fields from
nearby RADARs and, more likely, static damage.
The diodes are electrically fragile.
Likely ANY metal foil would have surficed but aluminum forms oxide (non
conducting) films, hence an imperfect Faraday shield. Also, aluminum was
in short supply in WW II. Lead was not, AFAIK.
