Hi:

A book that covers the ship mounted "DF" equipment is "Secret Weapon" by
Kathleen Broome Williams, Naval Institute Press, 1996, ISBN: 1-55750-935-2.
It turns out that shipboard HFDF can locate enemy ships and allow an
attack to be carried out. But it's not on the LO, just normal coms.
The Enigma intercept information was not that useful when it comes to an
enemy attack, but HFDF was very valuable. In particular the HFDF
covered in the book is the type involving a swept CRT display that
operates in real time on a transmission lasting a fraction of a second,
not a manually turned loop. This is the type of system used in the
Elephant Cage shore based HFDF systems. Prior to the Henri Busignies
invention there were not any good shipboard HFDF systems because the
size of the antenna arrays was much too large for a ship.
