Buddy of mine was in England with Air Force years ago and tells of the
"telly tax" and the DF vans checking on 'tax payers'.

While stationed in Germany in the 60's there was a tax on TV's and there was
a van that went around that would detect a television receiver in the
German's residence for taxing purpose. The government housing was of course
exempt. Apparently the TV's Local Oscillator was strong enough to be
detected.

grid tubes, and the minimal amount of shielding between stages that almost
every commercial or military receiver had by the mid thirties not to mention
active RF stages that provide isolation from the mixer find it highly
unlikely that much can be obtained or be of use from embassy listening at a
distance of over several feet. Maybe in the teens and twenties when they
still used regenerative receivers or some bread board triode stuff but not
beyond that.
