Ben,
First, let me point out that the assumption that stuff like this only happens
to buyers is false. PayPal pulled one on us only yesterday and has taken
away our payment based on a buyer's false claim of non-receipt, hijacked account,
etc. several times. But I won't waste space on the details. I'll just say
(again) that PayPal and eBay don't side with either buyers or sellers. They
side with PayPal and eBay.
But in this case, technically PayPal is correct. Your beef should be with
eBay, although it may do no more good. If you log into your eBay account and
find the Dispute Console (usually a link on your My eBay page but yours could be
different from the current US one), you'll find an option to report an item
as significantly unlike what the seller claimed. Beyond that, I know nothing
about how or if it works as we've never needed to use it as buyers and no buyer
ever used it on us. But it won't cost you anything but a little time to try
it.
