Yes they did!  The German cryptographic bureau successfully read the mail of
all their enemies, and their allies, at least in part, including us.  All
countries do that, all the time.  This includes radio, mail, cable,
diplomatic bags, etc.  I can't find my reference just now, so you will have
to trust me.....  This stuff has a short time value, and is often worthless.
