Thanks for the info Tom.
I had a DW-* manual some years back that I sold to another collector
'cause I didn't have, or hope to have, one.I also recall that the early
coupler unit had "double ended tubes" i.e. grid connections at the top
of the tubes;thus there was a small raised cover on the back left(?)
corner of the coupler unit As Tom's info suggests, the DW loop was out
in the slipstream, thus requiering a hand wheel to alow the operator to
get a "firm grip" on his bearing
If anyone in the SanFransisco Bay area has time to investigate,I
remember seeing a DU or DW on display at the small museum at Moffet
Field in Hanger 1.(The company I worked for at the time had one of
their annual picnics there. The accoustics in Hanger 1 are just awful
for a live band by the way...).
Also, BTW, there is some company with a real Zellelin working out of
Moffet doing very expensive airostatic tours.I wonder if they'd be
willing to loft a GO-9 for an event station....That would be pretty
cool.
Just dreaming,
Jay KE6PPF

Subject: [Milsurplus] DU & DW Differences
I have a mint DU-2 and the carcasses of 3 DW loops as well as manuals
for both........as Jay (KE6PPF) said, the only difference is the tube
that connect
s the loop antenna to the control unit. The DU loop is
mounted directly to the azimuth scale on top of the control and, to use
the manual's words:
"This equipment is intended for installation on open cockpit types of
Naval aircraft, such as scouting and observation planes, where all
operating controls must be accessible to the pilot and observer".
The DW-1 manual states:
"This equipment is intended for installation on the larger types of
Naval aircraft, such as patrol and transport planes, where the loop may
be plugged into a shaft which extends directly up through the skin of
the ship from the direction finder coupling unit in the radio
compartment." With the long support tube, the DW also uses a bearing at
the point where it goes through the aircraft skin as well as a
handwheel (for rotating the loop) just above the azimuth scale on the
coupling unit.
Regards to all,
Tom
